EuropeAid has selected consortia to provide technical assistance in the 5 year framework 'Strengthening for Fishery Products Health Conditions in ACP/OCT countries' (2003-2008). MEP is involved in two consortia for: Lot 1: Studies and Artisanal Fisheries Support - with Fish Systems, under the lead of Agrisystems and Lot 2: Advice on Sanitary Controls for Public and Private Sector -with ACP Sanifish, under the lead of Carl Bro a/s. MEP has been selected to advice and support the Competent Authority in Benin. A fish quality expert has been appointed. An auto-suspension of exports (shrimps) into Europe has been imposed by the Veterinary Organisation of the European Commission. The MEP expert (1) assessed the strengths and weaknesses of the Competent Authority to comply with European standards (regulation 91/493/CEE), (2) inspected the fishing companies, (3) evaluated the artisanal fisheries sector. Recommendations for future complementary missions within the EU framework followed.
