MEP undertook a wide-ranging study on the aquaculture industry throughout the EU over the last 10 years together with assessments of prospects for the next 10 years. The aim of the study was to assist DG Fisheries in its approach to aquaculture support legislation and investment in the sector. The study examined current and historical production, prices, profitability, employment, markets, trade, disease and environmental constraints, and comparisons with other non-EU producers for ten main production species. The 10-year outlook involved complex market analysis, demand forecasting and scenario modelling to show the impact on future profitability of certain production increases and changes in costs of production. The report also undertook detailed analysis of the role of EU financial assistance to the sector.
