An MEP team supervised the management of a Line of Credit to fisheries through the procurement of engines, fishing gear and equipment. The team comprised a finance manager, marine engineer, fisheries technologist and naval architect and undertook detailed examination of the semi industrial fisheries sector. Specifications for all machinery, gear and equipment were drawn up and tender documents prepared. Following evaluation of tenders and purchase of equipment, MEP staff advised vessel owners and boatyards on installation and maintenance of engines, fishermen on making up and use of nets and fishing gear, and Bank staff on follow-up activities. Improved gear was demonstrated to fishing communities and a resource evaluation expert examined effects of increased fishing effort on selected stocks.
