Organisation of workshop, held in Athens, to assess the viability of utilising VMS on artisanal fishing vessels in the Mediterranean which was attended by experts from research institutes in Spain, Greece, Italy and France, technical experts (especially in satellite systems), government and EU representatives. Areas of expertise included marine biology, fisheries management, fisheries control and inspection, artisanal vessel operation, seafood marketing, remote data gathering, telemetry and mobile telecommunications system architecture. The workshop output provided confirmation that VMS in this area was viable and a fully funded trial was proposed..
