MEP competed in an International Tender for two fish carrying vessels for Guinea Bissau. The vessels were required to operate in a remote island group delivering fish to a central processing plant and from the plant to the mainland centres of population. The vessels were ordered in 1978 and delivered in 1979. MEP staff commissioned the vessels, trained operating and maintenance crews and established operational routines to provide the required services whilst allowing for maintenance of vessels and machinery. As part of the same programme, MEP was commissioned to design and construct prototype fishing craft. These were delivered, some complete and some in kit form, to Guinea Bissau, assembled and trialled in a programme designed and monitored by MEP.
