MEP conducted a survey of propulsion in West African artisanal fisheries. Declining production and profitability due to rising fuel prices and spare part shortages were documented. Project proposals were drawn up designed to reduce fuel consumption by use of auxiliary sails, smaller horse power engines, and the introduction of diesel engines.
