An MEP artisanal fisheries specialist surveyed the fishery of Northern Java at the request of the Government of Indonesia to determine propulsion constraints on village fishermen. Sea trials were conducted with improved sail systems, local artisans were trained in their manufacture and long term proposals for improvement to fishing craft hulls, fishing methods and sailing rigs drawn up.
