Fisheries Research In Packistan

Region: Asia
Country: Pakistan
Date: 2001 - 2004
Funded By: PRIVATE

Fisheries play an important role in Pakistan's economy, providing direct employment for some 300,000 fishermen, and a further 400,000 through tertiary industry. Around 16,000 fishing boats operate along Pakistan's 1,120km of coastline, targeting a diversity of species ranging from inshore pelagics, to offshore demersals. MEP were retained by a private fisheries company to establish the opportunities for purchasing, processing and subsequently exporting sea food products from Pakistan to markets in Europe, the USA and Asia. To determine this MEP specialists visited the Sindh province of Pakistan, and reviewed the capacities and quality of a number of different ports, establishing sanitary & hygiene levels, communications for export, and the species available. The different fisheries, pelagic, demersal and offshore, operating in the Sindh province were also reviewed with particular emphasis given to the sustainability of the fishery and it's ecological impact. MEP produced these findings in a report which provided comprehensive information on the costs and benefits of establishing a fisheries export company in Pakistan.
