MEP provided a master fisherman to conduct a programme of trial fishing with new fishing methods to determine future planning for the indigenous commercial fishery. 22 metre and 12 metre fishing vessels were constructed with planning and economic evaluation; fish landing places were rehabilitated; facilities repaired; catch rates and species were analyzed; sources of fishing gear were identified and costed. MEP staff manage the Fisheries Technology Unit and advise on export markets to Europe.
