Following an oil spill off the east coast of the UAE, fishermen presented a claim for compensation which included loss of revenue from reduced fishing days and loss of fishing gear as a result of the spill and resulting clean-up operation. MEP sent a fisheries economist to the UAE to assess and evaluate the fishermen's claims for compensation. Research was undertaken to enable the construction of a model to estimate lost revenue and survey work was carried out to corroborate the value and amount of gear used in the fishery which was lost as a result of the spill. A recommendation for compensation was then made.
