MEP carried out an overall assessment of the fishing industry in the ports of Scarborough, Filey and Whitby, with emphasis on the quality and marketing of the fish. This project was partly funded by the EC PESCA Scheme to facilitate the meeting of EC Hygiene standards set out by DG XIV. Recommendations were made as to possible means of maximising the value of the fish to the area as a result of improving handling techniques, auction practices and facilities, and through adding value by processing the product.
