Saundersfoot Harbour Management Study
Region: Europe
Country: United Kingdom
Date: 1997 ongoing
Funded By: Pembrokeshire County Council
The Phase 1 Study considered the potential development of various fishing activities within Carmarthen Bay and the role of Saundersfoot harbour in servicing these fisheries. The possible rejuvenation of the whelk market was assessed as well as practical harbour management and financing. Conflicts between the fishing and tourism industry were also considered. The Phase 2 study is entitled 'Saundersfoot Harbour Strategy and Development Plan' and is to consider the following issues within the harbour area, whilst appreciating that the harbour is an integral part of Saundersfoot's identity and economy: Potential physical developments to the harbour, particularly with respect to the constant silting of the harbour mouth (see picture) and wave action within the harbour; Development and possible improvements to harbour management; Possible uses for buildings within the harbour, and in particular the former coal shipping office, known locally as the 'BBQ' building; and Potential for setting up a lobster hatchery within the harbour.
