Eating fish is not as simple as it once was. As the world's resources are becoming increasingly over-exploited, the public is becoming increasing aware and concerned that these resources should be managed responsibly. The award-winning Bank Group Restaurants Plc has recently opened their first Fish! diner and shop in Borough Market, South London, and have publicly committed themselves not only to sourcing fish from well managed fisheries but also to be able to substantiate these claims. They have asked MacAlister Elliott and Partners Ltd (MEP), the international fisheries consultants of Lymington in Hampshire, to undertake a survey of all their fish suppliers. William Black of Fish! says: 'We are actively seeking ways to encourage responsible practice. All our suppliers will be monitored and assessed by the MacAlister Elliott and Partners' team of marine consultants who will be working on our behalf with SGS, the world's largest independent certification company. 'We will use as our guiding principle the FAO's (Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations) Code of Conduct for responsible fisheries, and will be working alongside the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), and the World Wildlife Fund's Endangered Seas Campaign. The work will assist in tracking fish sold through Bank Group, which intends to buy only from responsibly-fished and well managed fisheries.
