MEP made a detailed study of the possibilities for expanding aquaculture in the South-West of England. The purpose was to examine the employment potential for fishermen leaving the capture sector. A multi-disciplinary team looked at production potential for molluscs, crustaceans and fin fish in 15 estuaries and other areas. The study particularly addressed molluscan shellfish and contamination of coastal waters, processing requirements, marketing issues, legal aspects and interactions with the environment.
