An MEP resource specialist assessed the Thames herring fishery for compliance with the Principles and Criteria for Sustainable Fishing established by the Marine Stewardship Council. The assessment of the fishery involved consultations with stakeholders including the Herring Management Committee, English Nature, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, participating fishermen, processors, merchants, wholesalers, and retailers. All pertinent data and information relating to fishing activities, landings, processing and marketing was reviewed and analysed and the effectiveness of the management regime for the fishery assessed.
