Conservation Of The Biodiversity Of Socotra Archipelago
Region: Middle East
Country: Yemen
Date: 1995 - 1996
Funded By: GEF
MEP specialists in fish biodiversity, coral reef ecology and CZM assisted GEF with planning a programme for the protection and sustainable development of the unique and little known Socotra archipelago. The team produced an inventory of marine taxa and coastal habitats, which included assessment of bio-geographic importance. Present and potential threats were evaluated and primary resource/user conflicts were identified. The project included an analysis of current use of marine and coastal resources and an appraisal of the traditional fisheries management systems in operation. MEP's final report, produced in conjunction with Edinburgh's Royal Botanical Gardens, included a proposal for project interventions and integrated land and marine resource management strategies.
