Regional Tuna Tagging Project - Indian Ocean (RTTP-IO) Regional Tuna Tagging Project - Indian Ocean (RTTP-IO) Regional Tuna Tagging Project - Indian Ocean (RTTP-IO) The overall objective is to reinforce the regional management capacity, leading to the sustainable exploitation of tuna resources in the Indian Ocean.

The specific objective is to reinforce the scientific knowledge of tropical tuna stocks and the rate of exploitation in the Indian Ocean by obtaining the crucial model parameters for stock assessment.

The project has two 22 metre pole and line vessels under charter. MEP staff make up the scientific crews on board managing the cruises and carryoing out the tagging and reporting. MEP staff also manage project administration in the SEychelles and the Tag Recovery Program ins all participating countries

Expected results
The expected results are:
(i) To achieve the tagging of a critical mass of fishes (minimum 80,000),
(ii) To achieve a significant percentage of tag recovery,
(iii) To process and interpret the recovered data, and to design scientific models for tuna stock assessment.
(iv) To reinforce the capacity of the RFOs and participating institutions in stock assessment and management.
