CARE Somalia: Tsunami Livelihoods Restoration and Strengthening Project. The main objective of this project was to identify the extent of fisheries activities in north east Somalia, the damage caused by the tsunami and the reconstruction needed to assist the fishermen of the region to upgrade their fishing activities. Additionally the study estimated the market (internal and external) for the sale of fish in five major fishing centres in Puntland, Somalia; in order that the fishermen could be supported to diversify their catch away from lobsters and shark fins.
A secondary objective was to identify the cost and benefit for the fishermen and all associated operators of developing the market to maximise the potential identified. This involved identifying and costing facilities such as jetties, processing factories and retail outlets.
The mission was undertaken via Field Assessments through May and June 2006.
