MSC Certification of data deficient mullet fisheries

MEP are undertaking a pilot assessment of the Yellow Mullet (Mugil cephalus) fishery of the Parc National de Banc d’Arguin Mauritania, as part of the MSC’s Guidance for the Assessment of Small Scale and Data Deficient (GASSDD) Fisheries Programme. The compliance of the fishery with the MSC Standard shall be assessed using the GASSDD and standard Fisheries Certification methodology (version 6). The project output shall be the production of the preliminary draft report and feedback to the MSC on the suitability and compatibility of the approaches used.
The aim of the study is to assess the fishery against the MSC’s Principles and Criteria using the newly developed precautionary risk assessment methodology to enable incorporation of areas of the assessment where data is poor or unavailable. This study, along with other trials in Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia will be used to by the MSC to evaluate the applicability of the risk assessment methodology and to facilitate its future development through identification of its strengths and weaknesses.
