Turkey, The Bosporus - Client P&I Club
A dry cargo vessel and an oil tanker collided in the Bosporus causing a major oil spill and a claim for lost fishing of over $3,000,000. Mep assessed the claims and negotiated a settlement of $280,000 as total compensation.
UK Shetland Isles - Client P&I Club
The oil tanker “Braer” grounded off the southern-most coast of the Shetland Islands. 84,000 tonnes of crude oil was spilt. MEP was responsible for all technical assessment of the impact of the oil spill on fisheries and aquaculture industries of the Shetland Islands (total turnover $150 million). Detailed assessments were made of the contamination levels of farmed and wild fish and the economic impact of a fisheries exclusion zone. MEP advised insurers on strategic decisions on farm management and loss mitigation, negotiated and supervised the destruction of farmed salmon and of compensation payments. The team also undertook surveys to assess short and long term damage to fish stocks. Economic impacts on fishing vessels and processing companies were undertaken and impacts on markets quantified.
UK, Wales - Client P&I Club
When the Sea Empress sank at Milford Haven in Wales a large fisheries and predominately aquaculture industry was affected, the UK Government declared an exclusion zone and all fish and fishery products from the zone was banned from human consumption. MEP set up and staffed a claims office to assess and assist claimants in the fisheries sector. Most of the claims were from commercial mussel growers and totalled several million.
Taiwan - Client P&I Club
Following a collision MEP calculated the loss of income of a Squid Fishing vessel.
Singapore - Client P&I Club
Assessment of the effects of an oil spill on fisheries interests. Survey of fish farms, assessment of fish condition, health, feeding patterns and markets. Economic assessment of the oil spill on aquaculture businesses.
Spain - Client P&I Club
MEP attended after a collision which damaged Mussel Rafts. Detailed calculations were made of the value of the repairs to the rafts and the loss of Mussels.
PRC - Client P&I Club
MEP carried out a survey to assess the damage to a scallop farm in the Bohai Sea after a vessel grounding. Damage to infrastructure and product was calculated and loss of earnings agreed.
PRC Law Firm
MEP investigated a spillage of styrene monomer off the Chinese coast. A full report was issued detailing the impacts on local fishermen and fish farms.
UK Law Firm
MEP made a detailed assessment of loss of earnings by a share fisherman following accident at sea.
Thailand - Client P&I Club
An MEP inspector carried out a survey of a damaged cargo of Bonito.
South Georgia - Client P&I Club
A vessel grounded in Cumberland Bay, South Georgia and an MEP team completed a report covering the potential long term and short term impacts of a fuel oil spill on Algae, Shallow water Fauna, Pelagic Fauna, Fish, Sea Birds, Penguins, Marine Mammals as well as terrestrial Fauna and Flora. Possible impacts of fishing gear loss and impacts were also considered.
Hong Kong - Client Lawyers acting for cargo owners
MEP were instructed to review documents including photographs relating to a claim for quality loss of frozen salmon fillets in a container en route from Chile to Bangkok via Hong Kong. The loss of quality led to the cargo being utilised for a cooked product rather than Sushi as intended.
Thailand - Client P&I club
A cargo of Tuna was allegedly contaminated with fuel oil. MEP technical expert organised the separation of the contaminated portion of the cargo and brokered the sale of the Tuna.
PRC - Client P&I Club
Cargo of frozen squid – condition report and advice given on remaining shelf life and possible cargo value.
Chile/Cuba - Client P&I Club
A substantial cargo of Mackerel was rejected, but after MEP technicians demonstrated that the cargo complied with the original specification and was in good condition, was accepted.
Korean/PRC - Client Cargo Insurers
MEP were retained to establish the condition and value of 6,000 tonnes of Squid which was rejected by receivers.
Egypt - Client P&I Club
Claim from five fishing co-operatives totalling about USD 13 million for loss of fishing and gear after an oil spill in the Suez Canal. MEP experts analyzed the claims and completed a review of the fishing co-operatives and their members.
