Services / Fish Processing and Marketing
MEP has been involved in all aspects of post-harvest technology, in both the public and private sector for many years. Areas of specialisation range from capacity building though to value adding.
MEP is able to provide services in a variety of areas and has experience throughout the world in the design and commissioning of numerous factories, product lines or simply in the improvement in HACCP or Quality Assurance systems in existing factories.
Value-added product development
Introducing new products to the market place requires expert knowledge to ensure a successful outcome. MEP can help in all areas of product development, from market analysis through to product design and import considerations, all the while ensuring a quick uptake of the product in the market place.
Example case studies:-
- Marketing/strategy study for a Saudi Arabian seafood processing plant.
Business Planning and Strategic Studies
Detailed business planning and the development of Strategy for both established enterprises and start-up operations form the blueprint required by investors and for management purposes.
MEP can provide a full feasibility study into any area of post-harvest production, allowing the client to present a fully integrated and considered plan to investors, purchasers or management teams alike.
Example case studies:-
- Improvement feed conversion ratios of seabream for a private fish farming company, Turkey
Sustainable Supply Chain Analysis
With heightening global awareness of the necessity to use natural resources sustainably, understanding and effectively managing the supply chain is key to long-term operational success and efficiency. It is also an important component of minimising exposure to risk when investing in fisheries or supply chains linked to the production of seafood products.
MEP offers rapid assessments and detailed analyses of the health (or otherwise) of fished stocks and provides advice to clients about the sustainability of supplies originating from capture fisheries and aquaculture production. MEP has, for example, recently worked with fishermen and suppliers in the European eel fishery to design and implement a sustainability standard to encourage sustainable use of this pressured resource. Please click here for an example (links to Eels ecolabel, already on existing website MEP - UK page, European Eel - Development of a sustainable standard).
MEP also provides Chain of Custody certification assessments against the Marine Stewardship Council standard, which audits the traceability of fish products from fishery to consumer, providing both suppliers and consumers with confidence that the products sold originate from sustainably sourced fisheries.
For MSC Chain of Custody examples, please look at at Global Network / Case Studies page or the MSC Chain of Custody Services section.
Factory Design and Layout
Compliance with international and national laws, cost control and an efficient factory layout are essential for success in today's international marketplace. An effective layout can enhance a company's efficiency and profitability, but at the same time has to address food safety. MEP can help in the detailed planning or re-design of any fish processing factory.
Example case studies:-
- Yemeni integrated fish catch and processing plant
Quality Assurance(QA), and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP)
The food safety legislation of National and International authorities continues to increase pressure on food producers to meet all their requirements, which means the development of modern QA and HACCP systems is essential. For example, compliance with EU and FDA regulations is an absolute prerequisite for entering lucrative seafood export markets.
MEP has a fully qualified team of experts in this field and can offer assistance in setting up all the systems required to satisfy the regulations and can also supply the necessary training in all aspects of these disciplines.
Many examples of this area of our work can be seen in the Documents area of our website.
Example case studies:-
- Strengthening National Health Control Capacity
Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and British Retail Consortium (BRC) Certification
MEP is an accredited Certification Body and can offer MSC certification to clients. Additionally this can be combined with BRC Certification audits to provide a cost-effective service.

Fisheries Harbour Design and Planning
MEP has been involved in the development of a large number of fishing port developments around the world.
The design of a port requires a large number of considerations, from the identification of suitable locations through to meeting national and international legislation requirements. Furthermore, MEP understands the importance of an efficient layout and design of port facilities, to maximise both handling capacity and help provide a high level of safety to its workers.
