Project Summary: Commercial Seaweed Farming
Commercial seaweed farming was proposed as part of a Fisheries Livelihood Resettlement Plan in Mozambique, requiring the resettlement of local communities and in turn the creation of a livelihood restoration package for affected people.
The site considered in this project sits in the very Northern corner of Mozambique, on the border with Tanzania and only 500 Kilometres to the south of Zanzibar. The objective of this study was to provide a clear and founded recommendation on whether seaweed production was feasible in the region, from both a technical and commercial aspect.
The assessment of the viability was made via a desk study, a site visit to the project area and visits to potential buyers and relevant government institutions. In general, the conclusions were positive with the opportunity for seaweed production seen as viable in the area.
