MEP worked with a team of ecosystem modelling specialists at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, UK, to deliver a unique assessment and mapping of the Somali upwelling, and its historic correlation with fishing catch and effort. AIS fishing effort data from GFW, catch data from the IOTC and other sources were linked to remote sensing data. Predicted oceanographic changes over the next century were assessed using new ecosystem models and the results were analysed in the context of maximum catch potential, as well as the degree of future fisheries investments and operations in Somalia.
